Live report: Dark Tranquillity & Moonspell, Hiraes @ Hangar, Belgrade – April 29th, 2025

There comes a time for every man, woman and child to witness Moonspell live… Seven or eight times… And exit the venue enchanted by the sheer eruption of voluptuous dark metal coming from that stage. Oh, there were two other bands on the bill as well!

Joking aside, the evening went surprisingly well from a number of aspects. First of all, the venue which I’ve never been to before. A massive hangar turned into a concert hall seemed a great idea, though there was a slight fear about the prospect of sound engineering in such a setting. Still, apart of a segment of the opening track by Hiraes and the first track and a half by Dark Tranquillity, it was rather good in that respect also. Then there was the question of capacity. Never would I have guessed this combo could gather around a thousand people in Belgrade! The venue wasn’t quite packed, but it was neatly filled which wasn’t a promise around the time Hiraes invaded the stage.

Having heard nothing of the band other than the announcement of a melodic death metal opening band, I went into their performance with no expectations at all. What came out of it was a really confident band, with obvious experience and mileage up there, even if they only exist for just about five years. The members, of course, are no newcomers and it is apparent from their handling of space and especially crowd.

As for their music, I’m left with a bit less enthusiasm. Though they dabble in melodic death metal and are doing it decently, there’s not much more for my taste. They have a number of good ideas but the songs themselves often go on for far too long and eventually I was losing focus. There was this one shorter track that proved my point (sorry, I cannot remember the title), being the most moving and best developed of the bunch.

Still, half an hour well used to warm up the atmosphere for what was my headliner.

Moonspell cannot do a bad show. Even half-assed is not an option. They’re giving their best, regardless of the setlist, surrounding, country, stage… Even if choosing “Opium” for an opening track is a suspicious choice, considering its sluggish heaviness, the Portuguese had little trouble waking up the audience to the audio-visual spectacle in front of them. Wisely crafting the flow of the concert, constantly looking to include the crowd, Moonspell proved that Serbia and Serbian fans reside deep within their Lusitanian hearts. The connection was undoubtful throughout.

Naturally building through the show, to the utmost pinnacles of “Vampiria”, “Alma Mater” (both with theatrics brought to the maximum by a specialized light show) and “Fullmoon Madness”, Moonspell solidified their status as one of the best loved foreigners on Serbian stages.

After such a magnificent expression of emotions, Swedes were left with an unprecedented task. Not only were they never up to my taste, but their sound was suffering greatly for the first track or two. It’s like the only audible instruments were the bass drum and voice. Everything else sounded like it was coming from a whole other room.

Still, matters of taste aside, Dark Tranquillity’s performance isn’t questionable. Highly professional, extremely experienced, plus they had the advantage of the crowd being overly “theirs”, meaning most of the fans were there to hear them play. And it was fairly certain that they didn’t disappoint. It was all there…

Except for me, as I took one more look of woe to the merch table where it was all way too expensive for my taste, including the overpriced small (domestic) beer. But it was all worth it. Because there comes a time for every man, woman and child to witness Moonspell live… Eight or nine times…

Dark Tranquillity shares their thoughts on their latest album:
“Returning to what we feel is the essence of our band, with a partially new line-up, was an extraordinary experience. It gave us the chance to step back and evaluate what we’ve built from a fresh and exciting perspective. This led to an intense and focused period of writing, during which we rediscovered and expanded upon aspects of our music in ways we never have before. Joakim Strandberg Nilson exceeded all expectations with his drumming, while Christian Jansson delivered fierce and precise performances. The process was challenging, different, and ultimately inspiring in the best possible way.”

For an in-depth look at the band’s journey, check out the documentary “Out of Nothing: A DT Documentary” (Century Media, 2009), filmed in their hometown of Gothenburg.

Dark Tranquillity is a Swedish melodic death metal band hailing from Gothenburg, a city renowned for its influential Gothenburg metal scene. Alongside bands like In Flames and At the Gates, Dark Tranquillity is considered a pioneer of the genre. The band was formed in 1989 by guitarist Niklas Sundin and current vocalist Mikael Stanne (originally under the name Septic Broiler). Early on, their sound was heavily influenced by thrash metal, drawing comparisons to Death’s early works.

Over the years, Dark Tranquillity has evolved, releasing 12 studio albums. Their latest, “Endtime Signals” (released in August 2024 via Century Media), will be showcased on this tour. This album marks the first appearance of bassist Christian Jansson and drummer Joakim Strandberg Nilson. All lyrics were written by Mikael Stanne. The band’s current lineup also includes Johan Reinholdz (guitar) and Martin Brändström (keyboards).

Moonspell formed in 1992 in the suburbs of Lisbon and quickly became one of the most influential names in European metal. Renowned for their unique fusion of gothic, metal, and atmospheric elements, Moonspell first caught the world’s attention with their underground EP “Under the Moonspell” and their landmark debut album “Wolfheart” (1995) released via Century Media. Their follow-up “Irreligious” (1996), cemented their place in metal history, propelling them into the global spotlight.

Over the years, Moonspell has continued to evolve, blending dark, gothic atmospheres with powerful metal riffs, and developing a sound that remains distinctive and influential within the genre. With a career spanning over three decades, the band has maintained a devoted fanbase across the globe, constantly pushing boundaries while staying true to their roots. In 2021, Moonspell released “Hermitage”, an album hailed as one of their finest works, with both critics and fans lauding it as one of the best albums of the year.

Their ongoing creative vitality and ability to resonate with audiences worldwide have kept them at the forefront of the gothic metal scene, proving that Moonspell’s dark, evocative sound continues to evolve with each release, captivating listeners with every note.

Hiraes, a German melodic death metal band hailing from Osnabrück, emerged in 2020, bringing together former members of Dawn of Disease alongside Britta Görtz, the former vocalist of Critical Mess. The band’s name, Hiraes, is inspired by the Welsh word hiraeth, which translates to a deep sense of longing or nostalgia.

Since their formation, Hiraes has released two compelling albums: “Solitary” (2021) and “Dormant” (2024), both under the renowned Napalm Records. With their powerful blend of melodic intensity and atmospheric depth, the band has quickly carved out a unique space in the melodic death metal scene. On this tour, fans can expect to experience the dark, brooding tracks from their latest release “Dormant”, as the band continues to captivate with their signature sound.

Don’t miss this powerhouse of metal! Come for the unforgettable performances, stay for the energy, the atmosphere, and the pure sonic devastation.
