Almost seems like it would be against some sort of a law, to have a Czech metal release that is straight-forward, easy to digest, label and define. I’ve heard a fair share of their bands and can name perhaps a handful that were treading a clearly visible path. You shouldn’t get distracted (let alone discouraged) by the description on their Bandcamp page. “Progressive metal band from Decin – Czech Republic” doesn’t even begin to paint the band’s spheres of interest. Though nothing in the syntax is decidedly wrong, progressive metal is just one of the ingredients which make Origin Of Infinity.

Elsewhere, I’ve stumbled across contrasting information about deathcore or djent as directions of our heroes’ quest. A contrast indeed! Technical death metal already seems much more appropriate. Listening to these fourteen minutes over and over again, it might be a good starting point in describing the latest EP by this Czech quartet. It’s definitely technically advanced. For a better understanding, let me namedrop for a moment. Think of “The Sound of Perseverance”, but recorded by Suffocation and then produced by Akercocke. Subtle keyboards appear from time to time, adding up a haunted atmosphere. Along with the frightful bass line, keyboards are making “Summoning of Own Demons” a heavyweight champion of “Exorcism”. The said bass guitar, handled by the untiring Mr. Honza Kapák as a guest (also in charge of recording, mixing and mastering), bears the djent infusion, particularly in the mentioned “Summoning of Own Demons” and the closing instrumental “Perish by Fear”. As for the deathcore characteristics, there’s not much more than the vocal duel of extremely deep growls and chilling shrieks. But that’s hardly exclusive for that particular genre.

Altogether, “Exorcism” is a technical death metal album, brutal enough for old school fans, though laced with black metal, djent, progressive and deathcore, so that it is clearly a product of 21st century. Origin Of Infinity made an effort to create driving songs, whose objective isn’t buried in the complexity of arrangements or skillfulness of individual musicians. These four songs (plus a short atmospheric introduction) have a firm structure and a thematic goal which is achieved both by solid piecing of musical parts and keeping them short and to a point.

Maturity in composition, along with musical knowledge and freedom of imagination is what makes “Exorcism” a material worthy of your personal evaluation. It’s got a broad spectrum of influences, coherently put together and therefore can be appealing to a wide mass of listeners. Try it online if you don’t believe me. And then go for the CD or a single-sided LP.

A musician by choice and a journalist by chance. However, much better at the latter one. Self taught reviewer for music and musical literature. Radio host when presented with an opportunity, video presenter when necessity calls for it. A future who-knows-what-else, since the curiosity and drive often surpass the possibilities and capability. But altogether a nice guy!
