Label: Season of Mist

Date: May 2nd, 2025

Well, I think it’s high time to review the newest album of some very well-known band. At least in my world, ignorance about one of the legends of not only Greek, but worldwide metal scene, a band thanks to which, inter alia, such a muse became popular among metalheads, seems like mockery. And existing since 1991 Nightfall is, the same as Rotting Christ and in slightly maybe smaller degrees Septic Flesh, undoubtedly such a legend. And right from the very beginning I must tell you that writing this review is quite a challenge for me. The reason is since first listening of “Parade into Centuries” I’ve been in love with work of this ensemble. All subsequent albums confirmed my belief, made my love even stronger – even underestimated from reasons unknown to me “Diva Futura”. It’s not different when it takes the latest work of Efthimis and company!

Let tell me more, “Children…” is, in my opinion, one of the best albums Greeks ever released. Well, as I mentioned, they actually never recorded anything even average, so it’s extremely difficult to choose the best release. There are, of course, albums I like more than other ones, but this doesn’t change the merits of the matter, much less my assessment of their entire work – differences in my “ranking” aren’t fundamental. And I don’t give a shit I’m totally subjective at the moment in this point! Especially reviews aren’t some scientific books created to spread objective facts. Anyway, the eleventh full-length of Nightfall contains ten compositions taking forty-three minutes and seventeen seconds. And even if they never changed their style too much, there weren’t any item I listed to and thought something like “What the fuck, is it really Nightfall? It sounds like some completely different band”, I somehow think this is back-to-the-roots album (and logo clearly indicates it), even if differences between “Macabre Sunset” and for example “Lesbian Show” or “Cassiopeia”. As always, we’re dealing here with huge element of melody, but at the same time you haven’t any doubts you’re listening to extreme metal in old good Greek style. And I deeply doubt that I must write anything about it. My scribble isn’t read by random people, so going into details, making it clearer what Greek style is about, misses the point, doesn’t it? Besides, even if there are such individuals among readers, what I sincerely doubt, then they should check out on their own – metal was, is and always will be music for people ready make sacrifices, dig on their own, who, to make it as clear as sun, aren’t interested to get everything on golden plate. For my part, I can only say that what I love about Greek style is the fact it’s not too easy to define. I mean, it mixes elements of several sub-genres of extreme metal. In case of “Children of Eve” dominating one is death/doom metal for sure (in meaning of early nineties), but you can even find some touches of Greek Black or other ones.

To sum up, Season of Mist released another very good album May 2nd. So, if you like such music and the ensemble, regardless of the fact if you “only” like it or are die-hard fans of it, you know what to do. Personally, I just can’t imagine that’s possible to be like “this isn’t anything for me”, but as I wrote several times before… By the way, I must tell you one more thing in the end. Namely, it was definitely worth waiting for just over four years that passed since premiere of “At Night We Pray”! Album is available both as 12” and CD, so you can choose physical medium that suits you better. Well, I know some of you will choose to have it in all possible versions as well – I personally know such maniacs and that’s the reason why I’m so sure it’ll happen. But if you want to have 12”, there are three versions of that, then you need to contact the band or a label as soon as possible, because of limited editions, so to make it clear – be quick or be dead!

I was born quite a long time ago in Poland (1974) to support the scene and keep metal flames away, even though I officially started to listen to metal at age of 13. Few years later (4, maybe 5) I decided to edit my own fanzine and this adventure lasted over years. Then, after graduating journalism, I wrote reviews, made interviews and live reports for some magazines. I moved to Sweden and my journey continued. Finally I became a part of the Abaddon team, where I'll stay until the last breath!!! I'd like to develop together with this magazine.
