Greek black metal legends Rotting Christ are finally returning to Belgrade after more than 19 years. The influential Athens-based band will perform at Zappa Barka in Belgrade on Saturday, November 21, 2026, bringing nearly four decades of extreme metal history to the Serbian capital.
Early bird tickets are available for 3,200 RSD through Hangtime ticketing service. Once the first ticket allocation sells out, the presale price will increase to 3,700 RSD, while tickets available on the day of the concert will cost 4,200 RSD, if any remain. Information regarding physical tickets at Katakombe Bar and Zappa Bar will be announced at a later date.
Founded in Athens in 1987 by brothers Sakis Tolis and Themis Tolis, “Rotting Christ” have become one of the most important and influential bands to emerge from the Greek extreme metal scene. Originally rooted in death metal and grindcore, the group quickly moved toward a darker sound that would help define the distinctive character of Greek black metal. The band’s early releases, particularly the “Passage to Arcturo” EP, established the foundation for what would become their signature approach. Their 1993 debut full-length “Thy Mighty Contract”, was a landmark release that helped establish “Rotting Christ” internationally and remains one of the defining records of the early Greek black metal movement. Just one year later, the band released “Non Serviam”, an album whose title would become closely associated with the band’s uncompromising artistic identity.
Throughout the 1990’s and early 2000’s, “Rotting Christ” refused to remain confined to the boundaries of traditional black metal. Albums such as “Triarchy of the Lost Lovers”, “A Dead Poem”, “Khronos” and “Sanctus Diavolos” saw the band incorporate elements of death, heavy and gothic metal while retaining the dark atmosphere and distinctive melodic character of their earlier work. The band’s official biography describes this period as the era in which they developed their own recognizable style and evolved from underground heroes into headlining status.
A major new chapter began with “Theogonia”, released in 2007. The album marked a particularly strong connection between Rotting Christ’s extreme metal foundation and Greek cultural heritage, mythology and traditional musical elements. That direction continued through albums including “Aealo”, “Κατά τον δαίμονα εαυτού”, “Rituals and The Heretics”, with the band increasingly incorporating ritualistic rhythms, choirs, epic arrangements and inspiration from ancient cultures around the world. The result is a sound that is difficult to place neatly within a single genre. “Rotting Christ” can move between black metal aggression, gothic atmosphere, traditional heavy metal melodies and grand, ritualistic arrangements while remaining unmistakably themselves.
The band has also developed an extraordinary live reputation. According to their official biography, “Rotting Christ” have performed more than 1,250 shows throughout their career, demonstrating the scale of their international touring history.
Rotting Christ’s most recent studio album, “Pro Xristou”, was released on 24th of May in 2024 and is the band’s 14th studio album. The album title means “Before Christ”, and its concept explores the last pagan rulers who resisted the spread of Christianity and the disappearance of ancient traditions. Musically, Pro Xristou continues the band’s trademark combination of monumental guitar riffs, melody, dark atmosphere and ritualistic elements. The record features ten tracks, including “Pro Xristou,” “The Apostate,” “Like Father, Like Son,” “The Sixth Day,” “The Farewell,” “Yggdrasil” and “Saoirse.” Rather than simply looking back at their influential early material, “Pro Xristou” demonstrates that Rotting Christ remain capable of developing their sound after more than three decades as a band. The group’s current discography has also continued to expand in 2026, with the release of a re-recorded edition of “Aealo” in January, further revisiting an important chapter of their musical history.
At the heart of “Rotting Christ” throughout their entire career have been brothers Sakis Tolis and Themis Tolis. Sakis handles vocals and guitar, while Themis is behind the drums. The current live lineup is completed by Kostas “Spades” Heliotis on bass and Kostis Foukarakis on guitar.
